Plymouth Dance Explosion

8 July 2010

Coming to a Primary School Near You

Dance in the playground, dance in the streets

Wiggle your bodies and stamp your feet!

On Thursday 8 July, dance will be exploding across Plymouth!  From Austin Farm to Whitleigh Community and Plympton St Maurice to Plaistow Hill - around 6,000 primary school children will be dancing to Black and White, the legendary Michael Jackson track - all at the same time!

The children and their teachers have been taught a set dance to the Michael Jackson classic by a Dance Explosion Team made up of professional dancers and young dance leads. At exactly 9.30am, Heart FM will be playing the track so that primary schools can tune in and take part in the biggest dance display Plymouth has ever seen. And you can join them too! Just listen out for the song at 9.30am on 8 July and strut your stuff – at home, in the office or on the street. Let’s make Plymouth explode with dance!

A group of children will also be dancing alongside the Heart Angels in the Piazza in Plymouth city centre. If you are out shopping, work in the city centre or just fancy joining in come down to the Piazza and have a bit of fun. You never know dancing might just be your thing. You won’t need to know the dance as the Angels and the children will show you the moves.

This exciting project is part of the Department of Health’s Change4Life programme which is promoting tips to encourage small manageable steps to help families eat well, move more and live longer.  The Plymouth Dance Explosion is being led by a city-wide partnership which includes Plymouth Dance, NHS Plymouth, Theatre Royal Plymouth,The Barbican Theatre, Attik Dance and Plymouth City Council. The aim is to show youngsters, their families and schools just how good dance is at keeping you healthy whilst having a whole load of fun. Traditionally dance has been considered something just girls do but the likes of Britain’s Got Talent winners Diversity and Aidan Davis have shown that dance is very much something boys do. Dance is totally hip and trendy.

We all know exercise is important but some children (and adults) are not so keen on sport and dance is also a great way of keeping fit. It is important that leading an active life is something that children grow up with. It is recommended that they have at least 60 minutes of activity every day to help keep them healthy.  Spending too long in front of the TV, computer or video games can mean our bodies don’t burn off enough fat.

Deb Lapthorne NHS Plymouth Director of Public Health said “Encouraging children to be active is very important for their future health. Active children are much more likely to be active adults and therefore much more likely to be healthy.

“In Plymouth we have higher than average numbers of people who are overweight and this has to be tackled if we are to make a real difference to the health of local people. “This exciting Dance Explosion project will not only see children across the city dancing on Thursday 8 July but it will hopefully encourage them and their families that dance is a fun way to stay healthy.” Russell Strode, Teacher at Laira Green Primary School said “Dance Explosion has brought our children into contact with dance as a form of physical exercise, different movement techniques and most importantly fun”.
